What is the Annual WCEE WOY?

WCEE hosts several special events throughout the year. Our signature event is the Annual WCEE Woman of the Year Award Ceremony. WCEE created the WOY Award in 1985 to honor a woman of recognized stature in the energy and/or environment fields.

Our 29th annual event is being held on Thursday, March 11, 2010. This year's recipient is Maggie Fox, President and CEO, The Alliance for Climate Protection.

Ms. Fox is a veteran of numerous national issues, political and environmental campaigns and has spent 30 years working to mobilize Americans to take action.

She is past National President of America Votes, a progressive coalition of over 40 organizations spearheading the largest voter mobilization and education effort in the nation.

Previously, Ms. Fox served as the Deputy Executive Director of the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental advocacy organization.

The 2009 honoree was Denise Bode, CEO, American Wind Energy Association. Recent past recipients of the WOY Award are Linda Fisher, Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer, DuPont; Eileen Claussen, President, Pew Center on Global Climate Change; Honorable Mary L. Landrieu, U.S. Senator, Louisiana; Kathleen McGinty, Pennsylvania's Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection; Sheila Slocum Hollis, Managing Partner, Duane Morris, LLP; Nora Mead Brownell, Commissioner, U.S. Federal Regulatory Commission; Carol Dinkens, Esquire, Vinson & Elkins; and Kathryn Fuller, President, World Wildlife Fund.

What is a WCEE Champion?

WCEE created the Champion Award in 1998 as a means of recognizing the importance of mentors for women professionals and to honor those individuals who have championed the advancement of women in our industries. The 2010 honoree is former Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Suedeen Kelly. Commissioner Kelly is the first woman recipient of the WCEE Champion Award. She is being honored for her six years at FERC as a fair regulator to both customers and utilities and an outspoken advocate for improving the U.S. transmission system, competitive markets, and the smart grid. She brought practical industry experience and consumer protection perspective to her position. Ms. Kelly is an outstanding role model for women in energy and the environment and an active friend to WCEE. She serves on the WCEE advisory committee and has been a candid inspiring speaker at WCEE events.

In traditional hard science and policy professions such as the energy and environmental areas, WCEE sought to honor those men who made an outstanding contribution to championing women and encouraging their professional development. Since then, WCEE has honored a select handful of individuals including; Branko Terzic, Global & US Regulatory Policy Leader, Energy & Resources, Deloitte Services LP, John Rowe, CEO of Exelon Corporation, Patrick Henry Wood III, Chairman, US Federal Regulatory Commission; Fred Krupp of Environmental Defense; Senator Jeff Bingaman (N.M); Charles Curtis, United Nations Foundation; and Kevin Ewing, Partner, Bracewell & Patterson.
