12:00PM - 1:30PM   Analyzing and Implementing Sustainability Solutions in Global Businesses

We are pleased to announce that John Friedman, Senior Director of Public Relations at Sodexo, will be speaking to us about how to evaluate sustainability throughout the business value chain -- from suppliers, through the manufacturing process, distribution and product end use -- and how to scale sustainability programs nationally and globally in organizations with hundreds of thousands of employees worldwide.

John's 25 year background includes both employee and external communications for Fortune 500, Global 500 and not-for-profit organizations. John believes that CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is an evolving business strategy in response to changes in what customers, employees, consumers, communities and shareholders expect (demand) from corporations in response to a combination of politics, globalization, corporate scandals, and the ease of communication. He currently serves as chair of the board of directors for the Sustainable Business Network of Washington (SB NOW).

Brown Bag: Energy RSVP
12:00PM - 1:30PM   Utility Solar - Significant Market Expansion Anticipated

While Congress formulates sweeping changes in energy legislation, some electric utilities are positioning themselves to deploy massive and innovative solar solutions. The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) just released a report in May 2009 entitled “2008 Top 10 Utility Solar Integration Rankings” that mirrors this statement. Julia Hamm, Executive Director of SEPA stated “These top ten rankings highlight solar leading utilities that have put significant effort into what have traditionally been customer-based solutions.”

With the Top 10 utilities deploying over 880 MW of solar in 2008, the report states a “Call-to-Action” to the remaining electric utilities to make major investments to increase the amount of solar energy in their portfolios.

PSEG ranked #1 for solar deployment on the east coast and #5 nationally. PSEG has recently launched a 100 million dollar solar loan program for residences and businesses in New Jersey.

WCEE is pleased and honored to have Julia Hamm, Executive Director of SEPA and Ann Hoskins VP of Federal Affair & Policy at PSEG to share their knowledge and experience of the utility sector expanded roles into the solar energy space.

12:30PM - 1:30PM   Networking Series: Maximizing Networking Information

In this session, Tiffany Adams, Vice President of Public Affairs for the National Manufacturers Association, will discuss how to be a better listener and how to effectively process and remember the conversational information presented to you.

Once information is conveyed, remembering the details will prove beneficial for furthering the conversation and providing additional contact with the individual in the future. “Doing your homework” can include keeping notes for future reference, mnemonics, and other tips on how to get the most from and give the most to your network. For example: if a week after you conversation you spot a training opportunity at a convention that is related to a topic discussed in conversation, why not pass the information along to an individual who may also be interested?

This section of training will also touch on investigating who the guests of the function will be, making sure to talk to a particular individual, or knowing about important or interesting current events and matters.

This event will be held on July 23rd at 12:30 p.m.; the Edison Electric Institute has graciously provided the venue. EEI is located at:

701 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
